Norovirus in New Zealand
Auckland Regional Public Health says 45 patients and 45 staff at Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital have contracted norovirus, reports Fairfax NZ News. The virus, which causes nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, has also hit Tauranga Hospital. Middlemore spokeswoman Lauren Young said that the virus entered the hospital via a member of the public. Young said the hospital is containing the virus using normal methods. They apply measures including gowning and gloving of people in contact with people that are infected, and strict hand washing measurements. Health officials have advised the public to avoid unnecessary trips to the hospital.
